USAA total-loss settlements

What USAA publishes about valuing a totaled car, quoted from its own claims pages — and the rules your state applies to any insurer, whichever one you are with.

What USAA says

How the value is determined
“Typically, your insurer will determine the ACV by considering your vehicle's condition before the crash and market value for similar used vehicles in your geographic area.”

What else USAA publishes

Quoted from its own claims pages, with the day each was read. These are the points where carriers differ from one another in writing — how long a rental lasts, what happens if you keep the car, who the check is made out to.

Questioning the valuation
“The actual cash value, or ACV, of your totaled car is determined by its pre-accident condition and the market value of similar vehicles in your area, and you should discuss this valuation with your insurer to ensure accuracy.”

Keeping the vehicle
“In these cases, the expected salvage reduces your settlement amount. If you choose to keep it, the car will also have a branded or salvaged title.”

What that page doesn’t cover

As of Sep 6, 2026, USAA’s published total-loss page does not address sales tax and fees, how to dispute the valuation or the valuation vendor.

That is not a criticism, and it is not unusual — every carrier we looked at is silent on most of the same points, and a claims page is not a policy document or a summary of state law. It matters only because those are three of the things most likely to be worth money on your settlement, and you will not find them there. You will find them below.

What your state requires, of any insurer

These rules bind USAA the same as everyone else. They are the part of the settlement that does not depend on which company you are with, and they are where a low offer is most often arguable.

If the offer looks low

Ask for the valuation report itself rather than the offer letter, then check three things: where the comparable vehicles came from, whether every deduction has something behind it, and whether there is a sales tax line at all. Those are the same three checks regardless of carrier.

The guides on comparable vehicles, condition adjustments and writing a counteroffer go through each in turn.
